Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter, NSDAR Restoration Project

The Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter, NSDAR, is leading the preservation and restoration of the historic Colonel Josiah Smith Cemetery in East Moriches. With support from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation, this project includes professional conservation of deteriorating and fallen headstones, cleaning and stabilization using preservation best practices, and ongoing documentation of the site. This effort honors the legacy of Revolutionary War patriot Colonel Josiah Smith and ensures this historic burial ground is protected for future generations through both expert restoration and community engagement.

The Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), is a women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. For over a century, the chapter has actively served the community through preservation initiatives, educational outreach, and support for veterans and local programs. Named for Revolutionary War patriot Colonel Josiah Smith, the chapter continues to promote appreciation of America’s founding and the individuals who shaped it.
