Roslyn Landmark Society - Mackay Estate Gate Lodge Restoration
Since its creation in 1961, the Roslyn Landmark Society has been at the forefront of the preservation movement on Long Island. Our mission is to preserve, promote, and provide access to the rich history and historical resources in the Village of Roslyn and the surrounding community.
The Roslyn Landmark Society received a $69,599 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation in May 2023 to support the restoration of the historic Mackay Estate Gate Lodge. This generous contribution will be instrumental in replacing the Gate Lodge's deteriorating doors and windows, preserving the architectural integrity of this iconic landmark.
The Mackay Estate Gate Lodge, designed in 1899 and built from 1900 to 1902, served as the entrance to the expansive estate of Clarence H. Mackay, a prominent financier and industrialist. The Gate Lodge, styled as a Tudor Revival, features intricate stonework, half-timbered framing, and a slate roof.
The Mackay Estate Gate Lodge is a rare example of Gilded Age Beaux-Arts architecture created by Stanford White of the New York firm McKim, Mead & White. The vision for this magnificent structure is for it to serve as a history education center upon completion of its restoration.
