The Northport Historical Society
The Northport Historical Society was founded in 1962 by a group of citizens concerned about preserving our shared history. In 1974, the Society found its permanent home in the old Northport Library building, an original Carnegie Library built in 1914. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
The mission of the Northport Historical Society and Museum is to preserve and promote the history of Northport - East Northport, and its neighboring communities through the collection and interpretation of historic information, artifacts, documents, and places. We foster a sense of community through the education of a shared heritage between the residents of the past and those of today. We house a collection of over 12,000 artifacts associated with the area's history which are curated and displayed in exhibits. We also offer educational programs and social activities crafted to welcome and engage all people. We work with others to maintain the character of the Northport-East Northport area through supporting efforts to preserve historic structures and spaces. Our collection is digitized and available for viewing in the Carnegie Corner Research Library in our gallery, which holds over 1,200 volumes. Also in our gallery is the Kids Make History Cove, a dedicated zone for children.
To truly fulfill its mission, with the $176,010.00 in funds awarded by the Gardiner Foundation, we will be constructing an entrance ramp and ADA-compliant bathroom on the first floor. This renovation is an investment in a more inclusive future, ensuring the Northport Historical Society and Museum becomes a welcoming space where all can learn and celebrate our shared history.
