The Occupied City: New York & the American Revolution at The Museum of the City of New York
For more than a century, the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) has shared the history, art, culture, and civic life of the world’s most influential city through immersive exhibitions and engaging programs. Founded in 1923 as the country’s first and largest city museum, MCNY combines its 750,000-object collection with immersive film and interactive experiences. Today, MCNY welcomes 250,000 visitors— including 35,000 students and educators—annually through programming that highlights New York City’s greatest strengths: diversity, innovation, economic energy, and creativity.
Description of the Project: In May 2026, MCNY will open The Occupied City: New York & the American Revolution, an expansive exhibition that brings to life the dramatic story of New York City from 1763 to 1789, when the city was at the heart of the American Revolution. The Occupied City will use an array of interpretive techniques and immersive moments alongside historical artifacts to tell personal and collective stories from that time-period and providing visitors with access points to see themselves reflected in the American story.
